I have an HO scale layout here but it has been a while since I worked on

to something, like the artsy parts like making scene, that I am not as good

I have an older (now) HO set, but it hasn't come out of bins in a decade or more, but we have a G-scale set that we only bring out for Christmas and it just gets bigger ever year (Bachman and LGB components mostly).

I was given a basket case of N scale trains, none of the locos would run, so waiting to buy a loco and will integrate into my O scale layout. Usually they just need a good cleaning, but that didn't help them.

Golf, a good walk spoiled. Im not that good either but there was a time when I worked at two country clubs and played golf on the team at Community College, I was around 40 when i started. A co-worker took me to a par 3 course near us and I was hooked. he played the course with only an 8 iron. he just carried around 1 club.

Well, in Athens everybody wanted to have spear, shield and armor because it qualified you as a citizen with voting rights.

On the other hand, the area I live in has a considerably higher concentration of firearms than most of the rest of my country and also happens to be an area where nothing ever happens. To the point a local punk band made a song whose chorus is something like "The country is burning, the country is burning, the country is burning and I don't care because my village is fine"

Well, the crowd that would restrict guns is usually the same crowd that restricts household objects because they look too scary.

I mean, carrying a can of legal, certified pepper spray here has the same implications you get from carrying a knife.

But following the question, I happen to have a gun. It is heavy and big and doesn't cut. Meanwhile a bushcraft knife is light and portable and can be used for lots of day to day activities. So yeah if you want to pack iron but don't feel like carrying a heavy chunk of metal it might make sense to pack something else.

You might have as well asked "if it is for defense, why don't you wear body armor and wield a pair of MAC-11 submachineguns?" Well, same reason why soldiers go around with rifles and cops with handguns: big weapons are less convenient :-)

you know someone could kill you with a household object quite easily and painfully as well. why are you uncomfortable about guns?

Because it's much *easier* to mame and kill with guns (intentionally or accidentally) than with other household objects.

That's what you THINK, but that's not true.
a properly secured firearm is safe. A firearm with a person who has proper understanding with firearms is safe.

i could take a pencil and shove it in your eyeball and hit your brain.
someone could take a 2 inch knife and stick it in your back and hit your heart.

Household item? There's that lady that decided to get stainless straws and fell on it and it killed her.

If someone intends to kill you, they will kill you.
I'm not shitting you when I say i can swing a hammer at you and you'd be dead before you can blink.

I'm being whimsical here, but obviously you haven't been exposed to firearms and fear them. It's understandable but it's sad.

You would be safer in a restaurant where everyone has a firearm than if there's a bad guy with a firearm and the occupants have no means to protect themselves.
We live in crazy times. what about an active shooter? What would you do? piss your pants or try to call 911 on your cellphone without them seeing you?

If you were properly trained and had a firearm you arent a bad guy. You are the person who can save lives. You might not have it in you to care enough to save a stranger's life but hopefully the person next to you has the means and will do so.

I was grown up to respect and understand firearms. I'm not a gun nut, and I do not own a firearm, but I am not afraid of them.

Also, if everyone in a particular place feels the need to have a gun, perhap it's not a safe place to live in.

By similar logic, if everyone in a particular place feels the need to have a screwdriver and hammer, perhaps the place is not very structuraly sound.
